The Case of the Severed Tendon

Charlie took his wife, Alice, to a restaurant for their anniversary. When they touched their wine glasses to toast the occasion, Alice’s glass broke in her hand and cut her. Charlie drove Alice to a hospital emergency room, yelling all the way that he intended to sue the restaurant for ruining their anniversary.

    “Forget the dress,” said Alice when she came out of the emergency room, her dress splattered with blood. “The doctor says I’ve severed a tendon and will never be able to move my right index finger again.”

    Alice and Charlie filed suit against the restaurant, claiming $ 100,000. for permanent injury.

    “Judge,” said the restaurant owner, “we should not owe a penny because we are only responsible for what we sell; we sold the wine, but we didn’t sell the glass.”

The Case of the Policeman’s Ticket Quota

Perry, a young state policeman, was promoted to Sergeant for bravery in the line of duty. Then he learned that every sergeant in the state highway patrol had a quota of 100 speeding tickets to give out per week.

    “That’s unfair to drivers and it’s illegal,” he complained to his commander. “I refuse to comply.” So Perry was demoted back to patrolman, but he sued the department for loss of wages and for punitive damages.

    “Judge,” he said, “you can’t lower a man’s rank and salary for speaking out against illegal conduct – especially in the police department.”

 

Too Old for Job

Amos was a salesman in the sporting goods department of a nationwide department store. One day the store manager came by and delivered some bad news.

    “Sorry it’s had to come to this,” said the manager, “but we have to let you go. We are changing our image, and we want some younger sales people.”

    “I am fifty-seven, but one of the best salesmen you have got.” Amos protested. “You are making a big mistake.”

Amos was given two weeks pay and terminated. He hired a lawyer who sued the store.

“They are guilty of violating the Federal Age Discrimination Law,” his attorney told the judge. “Amos is entitled to his job plus back pay.”
